TL;DR
Most professionals do not need a five-figure program to start using AI at work. A free-to-audit or low-cost course of 5 to 7 hours will teach you what generative AI can and cannot do, and how to prompt it well. Pay for more only when you have a clear goal: leading AI adoption in your company, owning analytics, or building automations.
- Cheapest useful start: Google AI Essentials or Generative AI for Everyone.
- For managers setting AI strategy: MIT Sloan's Artificial Intelligence: Implications for Business Strategy.
- For a structured, project-based career step (US learners): one of Try Tripleten → three AI programs, matched to your background.

How we chose
We looked for courses aimed at people who want to use AI in the job they already have, not career-changers aiming at junior engineering roles. Each option had to be online, run by a recognizable provider, and show its time commitment on its own site. Where a price was not readable on the provider's page, we say "check current pricing" instead of guessing.
1. Google AI Essentials: the quickest practical start
Google's short course covers AI basics, using AI tools for everyday tasks such as drafting emails and organizing research, prompting, and responsible use, across 5 modules. Google says it takes under 5 hours, needs no experience, and ends with a certificate.
Price: Google's FAQ says it is offered on Coursera at $49 per month in the US and Canada after a 7-day free trial, and may cost less in other countries. Many people finish within the trial or the first month.
Good for: anyone who wants a fast, hands-on introduction. Not for: people who already use ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot daily; you'll find much of it familiar.
2. Generative AI for Everyone (Andrew Ng, DeepLearning.AI)
Taught by Andrew Ng, this 3-module course covers how generative AI works, what LLMs can and cannot do, prompting tips, the lifecycle of a GenAI project, RAG and fine-tuning at a conceptual level, and how GenAI affects jobs and business. Coursera lists about 6 hours to complete and a 4.8 rating from more than 5,000 reviews.
Price: check current pricing on Coursera. The certificate requires purchasing the certificate experience, and Coursera mentions a free trial and financial aid for eligible learners.
Good for: professionals who want the "why" behind the tools and a sense of where GenAI fits in their team.

3. AI For Everyone (Andrew Ng, DeepLearning.AI)
The older, broader sibling: AI terminology, what machine learning can and cannot do, choosing AI projects, working with an AI team and building an AI strategy, plus ethics and AI's impact on jobs. About 7 hours across 4 modules.
Price: check current pricing on Coursera.
Good for: non-technical managers who need to evaluate AI project ideas. If you only take one Andrew Ng course in 2026, Generative AI for Everyone is the more current choice.
4. MIT Sloan: Artificial Intelligence: Implications for Business Strategy
A 6-week online course from MIT Sloan and MIT CSAIL that focuses on the business and management implications of machine learning, NLP, generative AI and robotics, not the technical details. It ends with a project where you plan how AI could be used in your own organization. MIT lists 6–8 hours a week (4–5 core plus optional extension work) and a certificate of completion from MIT Sloan. Enrollment and payment go through GetSmarter.
Price: $3,850 tuition. The next listed start date is 18 November 2026.
Good for: middle managers and executives who set or approve AI strategy, especially if the employer pays. Not for: people who want to build automations or analyses themselves; it is not a hands-on tools course.
5–7. TripleTen's AI programs for experienced professionals
TripleTen launched three new AI programs in October 2026. They target people with 2+ years in one business function who want to add AI skills to that experience rather than start over. All three are online and part-time, take 4–5 months at 10–12 hours a week, and can be paused once for up to 4 weeks. Each is built around four portfolio projects in a simulated company with 18 months of operating data, ending with a live 30-minute "pitch to leadership" reviewed by an industry expert and a hiring manager. They are offered to US learners.
Price (same for all three, per TripleTen's pages): $9,900 upfront, paid at once or in 2 or 4 payments. Installment plans total $15,000 (12 months: $500 down and $1,208/month; 18 months: $750 down and $792/month). Loans through Climb, Edly or Fortify are listed, and TripleTen suggests asking your employer about tuition reimbursement.
Career support: TripleTen's FAQs say career support runs up to 6 months after graduation; another section of the same pages mentions 12 months of career and job search support. Confirm which applies before you enroll.
AI Transformation Management
For people in operations, project management, HR, L&D, customer support or sales who will lead AI adoption: finding where AI pays off, building no-code agents (mostly in the Microsoft stack: Copilot, Copilot Studio, Power Automate), running a pilot, getting security, legal and IT sign-off, and measuring ROI. No coding background required.

AI Business Analytics
For financial analysts, accountants, AR/AP specialists and anyone who owns recurring reports. You learn SQL and Python alongside an AI assistant, build Power BI/Tableau dashboards and an "on-demand AI analyst" that answers questions about your metrics. TripleTen says it replaces its earlier Data Analytics program, and that you don't need SQL or Python to start.
AI Agents & Automation
For revenue and sales ops, support ops, process analysts and implementation specialists who run systems like a CRM or ticketing tool. The first 9 weeks are no-code; then you write Python with an AI coding assistant, use Git and automated tests, build agents with LangChain/LangGraph and RAG, and connect tools like HubSpot, Salesforce, ServiceNow, n8n and Workato.
Our take: TripleTen is the most hands-on option here and the only one built around a portfolio of work-style projects plus career support, but it is also a large commitment of money and about 200 hours of your time. The programs are brand new (launched October 2026), so there are no graduate outcomes for these specific tracks yet; the testimonials on TripleTen's pages are from its earlier programs. The salary figures TripleTen shows are its own job-market claims, not guarantees. It makes most sense if you are in the US, your background matches one of the three tracks closely, and ideally your employer will help with tuition.
Which one should you pick?
- "I just want to use AI better at work this month." Google AI Essentials or Generative AI for Everyone.
- "I manage a team and need to decide where AI fits." AI For Everyone first, then MIT Sloan if you want a recognized certificate and a strategy project.
- "I want to lead AI rollout in my company." TripleTen AI Transformation Management.
- "I live in spreadsheets and reports." TripleTen AI Business Analytics.
- "I run the CRM or helpdesk and want to build automations myself." TripleTen AI Agents & Automation, or try free n8n/Make tutorials first to see if you enjoy building.
Bottom line
Start cheap and short, apply what you learn to a real task, and only then decide whether a bigger program is worth it. A $49 course you finish beats a $9,900 one you abandon. If you are ready for a structured, project-based step and you're a US learner, TripleTen's three tracks are well targeted at experienced professionals; just confirm the career-support terms and that your role matches the track before you pay.
