TL;DR
Try Synthesia → is a mature AI video platform that turns a script, document or slide deck into a presenter-led video with a lifelike AI avatar, in more than 140 languages and voices. It is at its best for training, onboarding, SOP and internal communication videos, where you need lots of clear, consistent, easy-to-update content without booking a studio.
The free Basic plan is good enough to test the quality. Most individuals will land on Starter ($19 per month, or $14 per month billed yearly), and small teams producing regular content will want Pro ($89 per month, or $59 per month billed yearly). All prices were checked on Synthesia's pricing page in November 2026. Larger L&D teams that need SCORM export, SSO and unlimited minutes should talk to sales about Enterprise.

What Synthesia actually does
Synthesia started as an AI avatar video generator and has grown into a wider video platform. Today it bundles several tools:
- AI avatars. Type a script, pick an avatar and a voice, and Synthesia renders a presenter reading it on screen. You can add two or more avatars in a scene for dialogue.
- AI video generator. Turn documents, prompts or a PowerPoint file into a draft video, then edit it in the Studio editor.
- Syren, a newer AI video agent. You describe the video you want and it builds it. Syren uses more credits than a standard avatar video; the pricing page says a one-minute Syren video typically uses 1,000 to 2,000 credits.
- AI dubbing and translation. Upload a video file or a YouTube link and dub it into 70+ languages on self-serve plans, with voice and accent preservation and optional lip-sync (which uses twice the credits).
- AI screen recorder, a Chrome extension that captures and narrates screen recordings, handy for software walkthroughs.
- Interactive features such as clickable calls to action, branching, quizzes, roleplay sessions and conversational surveys.
For a training manager this matters because one tool can cover the script, the presenter, the screen recording, the translation and the quiz.
How Synthesia pricing and credits work
In 2026 Synthesia moved to credits, one shared pool you spend on video, dubbing, surveys and Syren. Every plan, including the free one, also gets a monthly free allowance of 10 minutes of Studio video creation or dubbing, 3 survey responses and 500 credits.
The pricing calculator gives these rough rates:
- about 100 credits per minute of video, after the first 10 included minutes
- about 76 credits per minute of dubbing
- about 350 credits per survey response, after the first 3
Synthesia stresses that these are estimates. Avatars, B-roll, motion graphics and dubbing each use credits differently, and generated B-roll with avatar actions costs extra (the pricing page lists 230 credits per asset).
In practice:
- Starter gives 1,250 credits a month, which Synthesia estimates at up to about 12 extra minutes of video on top of the free 10. That suits a freelancer or a small business making a few explainers a month.
- Pro gives 6,000 credits a month, up to about 60 extra minutes. Pro can also be scaled to higher credit tiers (12,000, 24,000, 36,000 and 48,000 credits a month) with a small volume discount, which is useful if your output grows.
- Enterprise removes the minute cap and adds custom credit volumes.
Yearly billing is noticeably cheaper on both paid plans. Before committing to a year, check Synthesia's help center for how unused credits are handled, and size your plan to your real monthly output rather than your busiest month.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Polished, consistent avatar videos that look professional for training and internal comms
- 140+ languages and voices, plus 1-click translation and AI dubbing
- A real free plan to test quality before paying
- Starter is inexpensive for individuals, especially on yearly billing
- PowerPoint import, screen recorder, quizzes and branching in one place
- Videos embedded or shared by link update automatically when you edit them
Cons
- Credit-based pricing takes some planning, and advanced features like Syren and lip-sync dubbing burn credits faster
- SCORM export, SSO, brand kits and live collaboration are listed on Enterprise, which many mid-size L&D teams will need
- Only one editor seat on self-serve plans
- Free videos are watermarked and cannot be downloaded
- Avatar videos still suit instructional content better than emotional brand storytelling
Who should use Synthesia
Training, L&D and HR teams
This is Synthesia's core market. If you produce onboarding, compliance, SOP or product training videos and need to update them often, an avatar video you can edit like a document saves re-shoots. Our guide to AI voiceover tools for e-learning developers covers the audio side if you prefer voice-only modules.
Small businesses and solo founders
Starter is enough for a handful of product explainers, FAQ videos or how-to clips each month. If you mostly need marketing shorts, also compare the tools in our AI video generators for small business list.
Global companies
Translation is a genuine strength. You can make one master video and dub or translate it rather than recording separate versions for each market.
Who should look elsewhere
If you want cinematic, generative footage rather than a presenter, a tool like Try Runway → is a better fit. If you mostly edit real camera footage and podcasts, an editor such as Try Descript → makes more sense.

How to get good results in your first week
- Start on Basic. Make a 60-second test video with your real script to judge the avatars and voices for your audience.
- Write for the ear. Short sentences and natural pauses make AI presenters sound far more human.
- Import your slides. If you already have a PowerPoint, import it rather than starting from a blank canvas.
- Measure your minutes. Track how many finished minutes you publish in a typical month, then pick Starter or Pro based on that, not on guesswork.
- Translate last. Lock the master version first, then dub or translate, so you are not paying credits to re-translate every edit.
Verdict
Try Synthesia → remains one of the safest choices for business training and explainer video in 2026. The free plan lets you judge quality at no cost, Starter is affordable for individuals, and Pro covers most small teams. The main things to watch are the credit system and the Enterprise-only features such as SCORM export and SSO. If those fit your situation, it is an easy tool to recommend.
